March 3 is a pivotal date in Bulgaria’s history. It is linked to the Russo–Turkish War of 1877–1878 and the signing of the Treaty of San Stefano in 1878. This period became a decisive step toward Bulgaria’s liberation from Ottoman rule and the path to restored statehood.
Liberation Day honors the resilience of people and the values that hold a nation together: dignity, unity, and hope. It also reflects the generations who preserved identity, language, and culture through difficult times — keeping the idea of freedom alive until it became reality.

Today in Bulgaria one of the warmest and most colorful traditional holidays is celebrated — Trifon Zarezan — the Day of Vine Growers and Wine. It marks the beginning of the new agricultural cycle and symbolizes future harvest, prosperity, and well-being for the home.
The main tradition is the first symbolic pruning of the grapevine for the year. Early in the morning, owners go to the vineyards, cut several branches, pour wine over the vines “for a rich harvest,” and make wishes for health, luck, and abundance for their families. It is believed that the way this ritual is performed sets the tone for the whole year.
Wreaths are often woven from the cut vine branches as a symbol of fertility and protection. After the ritual, families and friends gather around the table to enjoy homemade wine, food, songs, toasts, and heartfelt conversations — creating a truly festive and welcoming atmosphere. It is a celebration of the land, honest work, and shared joy.
